ANMAKUD Provides Rapid Response in Disaster Zones

Since 2021, the Ankara Motorcycle Search and Rescue Association (ANMAKUD) has been actively operating in the field during disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and wildfires. Chairman of the Board Levent Karagöz shared the association’s activities and their experiences during the February 6 earthquakes with our news platform.

Yesterday, commemorations were held across the country on the third anniversary of the February 6 earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş. Described as the “disaster of the century,” the earthquake saw thousands of volunteers and civil society organizations mobilize to support relief efforts. Among these teams was ANMAKUD, which played an active role in disaster zones by ensuring rapid transportation and coordination.

“WE WERE THERE DURING THE HOURS OF THE EARTHQUAKE”

Karagöz explained that due to severe weather conditions, they were unable to reach the region immediately by motorcycle. “We arrived in Hatay around 4–5 a.m. the following morning with our caravan and fully equipped vehicles. We were there during the hours of the earthquake. By working in coordination with other associations, we helped direct couriers and support teams,” he said.

THE FIRST MOTORCYCLE SEARCH AND RESCUE ASSOCIATION ESTABLISHED IN ANKARA

ANMAKUD holds the distinction of being the first motorcycle-based search and rescue association founded in Ankara. Operating entirely on a voluntary basis, the association aims to provide rapid intervention during natural disasters such as earthquakes, fires, and floods. Members support emergency teams by clearing routes, enabling rapid access, and strengthening on-site coordination.

“WE CLEARED ROADS THAT EVEN TRUCKS COULD NOT ENTER”

Providing further details about the association’s work, Karagöz stated that although they initially planned to move from Hatay to Kahramanmaraş, the scale of destruction in Hatay required them to remain there. He emphasized that ANMAKUD has taken active roles not only in earthquakes but also in floods and wildfires.

Karagöz noted that a 60-ton excavator was allocated to their team in Hatay. “We cleared roads that even trucks could not access because aid needed to reach affected areas. Being a formally registered association was crucial in enabling us to move forward and coordinate operations. The excavator significantly facilitated our work,” he said.

TRAINING FOR RAPID INTERVENTION IN DISASTERS

Karagöz stated that ANMAKUD currently has 44 members, 15 of whom are active responders who have completed AFAD-certified training. These members have undergone Light Search and Rescue, radio communication, and first aid training.

He highlighted that radio communication plays a critical role in overcoming one of the greatest challenges in disaster zones—communication breakdowns. “During the Hatay earthquake, we were authorized to use AFAD’s equipment, which greatly accelerated our operations,” he said.

In addition to radio and first aid training, the association also provides motorcycle and disaster equipment training within its means.

“WE MUST BE PREPARED FOR DISASTERS”

Reminding the public that Türkiye is a country prone to earthquakes and natural disasters, Karagöz emphasized the importance of preparedness. “We must be prepared. We should ensure that our buildings are structurally sound and, if necessary, invest in proper testing. Responsibility lies with us—we must protect ourselves and our families. Earthquakes, floods, and storms will continue to occur in Türkiye. Being prepared is essential,” he stated.

ANMAKUD’s work stands as a strong example of rapid response and effective coordination in disaster management across Türkiye. Through its volunteer-based efforts, the association aims to minimize loss of life and ensure that aid reaches those in need as quickly as possible.
